Support for Professional and Career Development

A wide range of Researcher Development Workshops and development activities are provided to staff by Learning and Development. This includes session and activities that have been designed for staff who undertake research.

    For Early Career Research Staff

    A researcher in first or second post (RA or RF). May have recently gained PhO and undergoing research training and skills development Working for a PI or in a group working for a PI.

    • PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS
      The personal qualities, career and self-management skills required to take ownership and control of professional development.
    • ENGAGEMENT, INFLUENCE AND IMPACT
      The knowledge, understanding and skills to engage with, influence and impact on academic, social, cultural and economic context. Other resources availa ble from Research & Enterprise.
    • RESEARCH GOVERNANCE AND ORGANISATION
      The knowledge of the standards, requirements and professionalism needed for effective management of research.
    • KNOWLEDGE AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES
      The knowledge, intellectual abilities and techniques needed to carry out excellent research. Access Research Staff-led Methods Training Funding.

    For Advanced Career Research Staff

    An established researcher with clearly developed skills supporting a PI and perhaps overseeing others' activities.

    • PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS
      Maintains career momentum. extending networks and acting as a role modeland mentor.

    • ENGAGEMENT, INFLUENCE AND IMPACT
      Engaging in supportive peer review and engaging with key researchers and teams in own and other disciplines
    • RESEARCH GOVERNANCE AND ORGANISATION
      Managing large, longer term projects and increasing funding knowledge.Research Development Office can support research funding plans.
    • KNOWLEDGE AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES
      Deep subject knowledge and making research breakthroughs and creating new models. Growing national and international influence.
  • UNIVERSITY SUPPORT

    As a researcher you can access support and advice in practicing your research and planning your career, this support is available throughout the university and includes:

    • Research & Enterprise: including supporting research funding applications
    • Centre for Educational Development: supporting learning and teaching
    • Information Services: IT training: computing, MS Office, social media etc.
    • Open Access (OA) team, within the Library provided advice and support on publication requirements for REF 2021, with other Library Training and Development Workshops also available.
    • Postdoc Staff in the Faculty of Medicine Health & Life Sciences can access further support via the MHLS Postdoctoral Development Centre. You also have access to the full range of activity delivered by other departments, please see the Staff Development Programme website.
  • ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT

    Organisational Development provide a range of learning and development activity which focus on developing management and leadership skills, e.g. the Learning for All programme. Further career development resources are available from link below.
