Reward and Recognition

Queen's University is committed to creating an environment in which employees feel recognised for their performance, contribution and accomplishments.

Strategy 2030 recognises that our people are at the heart of what we do and in response commits to investing in our people. This commitment is linked to the three pillars the People and Culture Plan 2023-2026 – Culture, Employee Experience and Building Organisational Capability, and is underpinned by the behaviours outlined in our Staff Charter, which shape how we work.

One of the ways in which we invest in our people is through our range of recognition awards.

Performance Awards

Performance Awards are monetary awards given to individuals, or to a team, who have demonstrated sustained exceptional contribution over the last academic year.

The nominations, which are made by managers, are informed by the annual Personal Development Review and ongoing PDR conversations throughout the year. The award is normally a one-off payment to the value of one increment on the pay spine. A consolidated award (i.e. a permanent incremental increase in base salary) can also be awarded, where an individual demonstrates exceptional performance and contribution on a sustained basis over a number of years.

Recognition Awards

Recognition Awards are vouchers up to the value of £50, awarded to staff at any point throughout the year when they have displayed exceptional performance and contribution.

It also recognises staff who have exhibited exemplary behaviours which are aligned to our core values and the behaviours set out in the Staff Charter.

Any staff member can make a suggestion to recognise a colleague's contribution, as long as it meets the criteria and is agreed by the relevant approver in their area.

Staff Excellence Awards

Based on our core values, the annual Staff Excellence Awards celebrate and reward the outstanding work that goes on across Queen's.

Winners and runners-up are selected by a judging panel having been nominated by colleagues, students or through self-nomination, and receive a financial award.
