Welcome to the Queen's Junior Academy Programme!
The Junior Academy Sports Programme is designed to empower male pupils in Years 8 to 10 by harnessing the power of sport to raise aspirations and academic achievement.
Each year, students from secondary schools across NI are selected to take part in this exciting journey, which builds early connections with Queen’s University Belfast.
As students progress through the programme, they move from active participation in sport to exploring its academic and leadership dimensions — laying the groundwork for future success.
Year 8: Discover & Explore
Pupils are welcomed into the vibrant university environment, where they explore Queen’s sports facilities, lecture theatres, student spaces and the world-renowned McClay Library. Their visits are packed with fun, team-based challenges led by enthusiastic student ambassadors, sparking curiosity and confidence.
Year 9: Learn & Engage
In their second year, pupils dive deeper into the science and strategy behind sport. Through interactive workshops, they explore topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, leadership, and management - connecting their passion for sport with real-world academic pathways.
Year 10: Lead & Achieve
The final year focuses on leadership and personal growth. Pupils work toward earning a Level 1 Sports Leadership Award, accredited by Leadership Skills Foundation UK. This nationally recognised qualification not only boosts motivation and self-belief but also equips students with valuable leadership skills for life.
After completing Year 10, Junior Academy Sports graduates can continue their journey at Queen’s by progressing into the Junior Academy programme in Year 11, which builds on their existing knowledge and experiences.

Through participating in the programme, I’ve become more confident in speaking in front of others and believing in my own ability. The programme has made Queen’s University and higher education a real option for me moving into the future. Ryan Bates - Year 10, Belfast Boys' Model
