Overview of the Session

Securing a fellowship can significantly enhance an academic career by fostering research independence, familiarizing fellows with the grant writing process, and building a track record of securing funding. However, it is a highly competitive process and can be daunting for those who have never applied for funding before. To succeed, it is crucial to plan well in advance, increase your awareness, and seek advice and feedback.

This event is tailored for research staff who are curious about fellowships, planning to apply for a research fellowship in the future, or currently in the process of applying. It will feature a short presentation by a fellow who will share their journey and experiences.

Attendees will then participate in an engaging 'group speed mentoring' session, where they will have the opportunity to interact with current fellowship holders. They will gain insights into the fellowship application process and hear about the experiences of becoming fellows. Attendees will also receive practical tips and advice on preparing their own applications. Additionally, grant application experts from the Research Development Team will be available to answer any questions.

Informal networking will also take place over lunch, which will be provided.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come - first served basis. While PhD candidates will be welcome to attend if places are available, priority will be given to research staff.

This event is organised by the Fellowship Academy, Postdoctoral Development Centre and the Research Development Team as part of our commitment to provide support for Queen’s researchers via the Researcher Development Concordat.

Registration closes on Friday 9 May 2025 at 10:00 to enable time for preparation which includes confirmation of numbers for hospitality.
