Declan Milligan graduates with Masters in Professional Nursing
Declan Milligan from Craigavon worked as a porter in Craigavon hospital when he heard about the new two-year Masters in Professional Nursing at Queen’s on the radio.
Having previously graduated in sociology and was working in a hospital setting, Declan had gained firsthand knowledge in the health sector and nursing was always something that appealed to him. Discovering this was a new streamlined course into two years was a key motivation for him to apply alongside some encouragement from his older sister, who’s also a nurse.
Throughout his time studying at Queen’s, Declan overcame illness and bereavement at an already challenging time with the covid pandemic but successfully completed his Masters and is celebrating today.
Declan said: “I had a few personal challenges along the way with illness and bereavement, but the staff were incredibly supportive in terms of my wellbeing and my academic work, and they did everything possible to accommodate me. I really appreciated this support from Queen’s which was a huge reassurance to me at this time. I found some of the scientific aspects within the course difficult to grasp especially after finding out I was dyslexic, however help and support from classmates, personal tutors and lecturers helped get me to the finish line.
“I enjoyed the variety of the course, applying the theory to hands on practice. I really enjoyed the practical side of the course, and it was interesting to view situations from other perspectives and apply the knowledge I learned. I would really encourage anyone thinking about doing this course and if you are a man thinking about applying just go for it – nursing is for everyone.”
Declan has successfully gained employment with the Belfast Trust as an oncology nurse.
