Peruvian graduate focuses on support for autism

Several years ago, in the village of Cusco, near Machupicchu in the highlands of Peru, Queen’s graduand Ezaeza Gaby Sanz Galvan set up an autism clinic in response to the lack of provision for people with autism.

Gaby said: “I have two nephews with ASD, and realised there was a huge need for autism services in my country. So, with the support of my sister, who lives and works in Cusco in the medical field, I started an autism initiative which offers interventions based on Naturalistic Developmental Behavioural Interventions to disadvantaged autistic children, adolescents and adults living in Cusco region.”

To increase her knowledge in autism, Gaby travelled to Belfast in 2019 to undertake a Masters in Autism Spectrum Disorders. It was while she was writing her dissertation that she noticed the lack of research for autistic adults so decided to continue her resear ASD to help their autistic adult children but, currently, there is insufficient research for them to access. It made me realise that I needed to research more about that so that parents who have adults with ASD can access new strategies to deal with problem behaviours.”

As part of the PHD, she will work with Peruvian and British families who have autistic adults with intellectual disabilities. The online study not only means it is accessible but also acts as a support group to parents: “This intervention will help parents who are currently experiencing high levels of stress and depression with the aim of improving their wellbeing and mental health.”

Gaby, the youngest of nine, will be joined at the graduation ceremony by a good friend she met during her studies here while her family will be cheering on, watching her on the live feed.

Speaking about her time at Queen’s and her graduation, Gaby said: “I couldn’t be more grateful to my professors, supervisors and all the wonderful staff that helped me during my studies at Queen’s. I remember everyone there with much love and I am so glad that I can finally see this achievement of getting my masters through my participation in the graduation ceremony.”
