Four years ago, the students began their studies at Queen’s, taking on a Software Engineering Higher Level apprenticeship. They also took part in high quality work experience in PwC’s Belfast office and are now graduating with a full BSc degree. 

Through the programme, the PwC apprentices benefitted from a full salary and benefits from their very first day, as well as having their tuition fees paid, thanks to support from PwC and the Department for the Economy. They will now continue their careers at PwC. 

Programme Graduate Ronan Monaghan said: "The Technology Degree Apprenticeship has provided me with a head start in my professional life. I have not been hampered with student loans thanks to no tuition fees and a salary from PwC, I have received relevant work experience that supplemented my studies rather than taking away from them, and I have been offered a full-time job at the end of it all.  On top of this, I have made long-lasting friendships in both work and university. To anyone considering studying at Queen's to pursue a career in technology, I would highly recommend this programme." 

The Technology Degree Apprenticeship was designed to act as a key pillar to support the growth of the Northern Ireland economy by helping produce skilled talent in a field where demand is high and predicted to grow in the coming years. The full-funding and salary also enables students from all socio-economic backgrounds to access a degree, work experience and accelerate their career. 

Dr David Cutting from the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Queen’s University says: “At Queen’s we are delighted to see this dedicated and enthusiastic group of PwC apprentices graduate today. They started on their journey four years ago and since then they have worked hard – through a very challenging time – to complete their studies. 

“Often, we hear about the struggles that so many companies have in recruiting skilled staff. This programme is a shining example of how new approaches to education is helping to meet the demands of industry. Through world class teaching and facilities, we are training up the next generation of graduates at Queen’s to ensure that Northern Ireland can develop to its full potential.”
