^{Professor Greer plants a magnolia tree on the grounds of Queen’s University, accompanied by Environmental Officer Naomi Martin, to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 6th June}

The University has a long association with the Royal family, having been founded by Queen Victoria in 1845 before the three Queen’s Colleges of Ireland were dissolved to make way for the Queen’s University Belfast in 1908. 

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her family have graced the University with visits on many occasions over the years, with the Queen Mother having been awarded an Honorary Degree and Her Majesty The Queen serving as the Visitor to the University.  

Speaking about the tribute, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Greer said: “It is a great honour to pay tribute to the incredible 70-year reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This is the first time that a British Monarch has celebrated a platinum jubilee. It speaks volumes about the Her Majesty’s dedication and commitment to service. 

“The University is delighted to mark this occasion with the special planting of a magnolia tree, which also aligns with our commitment to sustainable planting. 

“I am also pleased to announce the launch of four new Platinum Jubilee Scholarships in honour of Her Majesty The Queen that will commence in the 2022/2023 academic year. Two undergraduate scholarships will be awarded to students who have gained a place at Queen’s through the Queen’s Senior Academy or Pathway Opportunity Programme while two postgraduate scholarships will be awarded to individuals coming from a low-income family background.   

“On behalf of the students, staff and alumni of the University, I wish Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II good health for a very enjoyable Jubilee celebration. We also extend our warm congratulations on her significant achievements.”
