Queen's recently hosted the STEAM summer scheme for local children from the Markets community
Queen’s recently hosted a week-long STEAM summer scheme for young people from the Markets community in Belfast, giving the young participants a broad range of educational experiences and a taster for future studies and careers paths.
Co-designed by Queen's Communities and Place (QCAP) and the Market Development Association, the STEAM Summer Scheme took place from the 24 – 28 of July 2023 for 40 young people from the Markets community, aged 8-12 years old.
The summer scheme links to QCAP's programme of work connecting partner communities with opportunities related to the Belfast Urban Innovation Framework and pathways into employment in priority growth sectors.
The young participants took part in activities across the Queen's campus including visiting the Sonic Arts Research Centre; Marine Laboratory in Portaferry; the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research; and the Robotics Lab at the Global Innovation Institute, part of the Queen's-led Belfast Region City Deal innovation centres, which are focused one ensuring the workforce of the next generation has the digital skills needed for our economy.
The week ended with a celebratory event for the young participants and their families at Queen's.
