Colette previously graduated from Queen’s with her undergraduate degree, BA Spanish & Italian, and a PhD in Entrepreneurship. 

During her studies, Colette was diagnosed with cancer during the Covid-19 pandemic. She said: “I started the MA in 2019 as a part-time student and successfully completed my first year. I was really enjoying the course and made some good friends. 

“A shock cancer diagnosis in 2020 during the Covid lockdown forced me to take a year out. Unfortunately, the side effects of the radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy meant that I had to take even more time out. I really thought I would have to abandon the course completely, but I managed to return to Queen’s in October 2022 to complete my studies.” 

Talking about support she received from the University and her student experience, Colette commented: “The entire Queen’s team was really supportive. My lecturers understood that I would not be able to make every class and I was offered extensions to assignment due dates when needed. Without this support, I would have had to defer my dissertation for sure. 

“This course has been a lifeline for me. I loved the informal workshops, the constructive feedback on work in progress and all the brilliant ideas generated in class. Also, the other MA students in my class were a great support. Such a talented, creative and supportive bunch of people.” 

During her time at Queen’s Colette had some of her work published and performed. She said: “My work was aired on BBC Storytellers in April 2023, scenes from my script were read by professional actors at the Brian Friel Theatre, and I read my own poetry at the Ulster Museum. These experiences were surreal!” 

Looking ahead to her graduation day and the future, Colette said: “It feels amazing to be graduating. I never thought I would make it to this stage. I plan to celebrate with a nice day out with my family. I simply wouldn’t be here without them! 

“After graduation, I would love to continue with my creative writing and try to get some of my crime fiction work published.”
