Queen’s staff recognised in King’s Birthday Honours 2024

Honours are awarded by the King following recommendations by the prime minister or senior government ministers.

Members of staff at Queen’s University Belfast have been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List. 

The full list of staff recognised is below: 

  • Professor Donna Fitzsimons, Head of Queen’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, has been named Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to healthcare and education; 
  • Professor Barbara Jemphrey, Director of the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queen’s, has been named Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to education; 
  • Professor David Jones FREng, Professor of Pharmaceutical and Biomaterial Engineering and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, has been named Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to education and pharmacy; 
  • Dr Seamus McAleer, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Oncology at Queen's Centre for Medical Education, has been named Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to cancer care and treatment;
  • William Patterson, Governor at Stranmillis University College, has been named Medallist of the Order of the British Empire for voluntary service to higher education. 

Queen's Senate Member Robert Bailie OBE has also been recognised in this year's birthday honours - he has been named Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the economy and opera.

Queen’s University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer said: 

“I would like to offer my congratulations to the Queen’s staff and those in our wider University community who have been recognised in this year’s birthday honours – this is a testament to their hard work and dedication in their respective fields. These colleagues are helping to shape a better world by driving forward our University’s work in changing lives for the better by providing educational opportunities, driving prosperity, and finding solutions to the many major and existential challenges facing our communities and the wider world since 1845.”
