Dr Fino is an expert in individual differences in personality and identity, and their relationships with mental health and wellbeing.
Dr Fino's research focuses on the intersection of personality and identity, exploring how individuals differ in their identity perceptions and how these differences influence their ability to navigate adversity and cope with traumatic experiences. The work actively investigates antagonistic and maladaptive personality traits, depersonalisation/derealisation disorder, eating disorders, chemsex-related risk, and wellbeing. Dr Fino has a background in psychological assessment, with expertise in scale development and psychometrics, with interest in the cross-cultural adaptability and invariance of psychological measures. @emanuelefino.bsky.social

Dr Fino was recently interviewed by BBC Focus magazine about his research on so-called “dark empaths”, ie. individuals who exhibit dark personality traits such as manipulativeness and egocentrism while also possessing the ability to understand, process, and leverage their own and others’ emotions for personal gain. Last year, he also contributed to a video documentary on depersonalisation and derealisation disorder, produced by Unreal, a UK-based charity dedicated to raising awareness of the condition.
