The McClay Library

The McClay Library, opened in 2009, blends the best features of a traditional library with the latest technology. The building accommodates 2,200 reader spaces and houses 1.2 million volumes.

Illuminated by a multi-storey open atrium, the award-winning McClay Library includes IT training rooms, a Language Centre, library and computer support areas, and a café, alongside the University’s Special Collections and the C.S. Lewis Reading Room. By combining traditional library features with cutting-edge technology, the McClay Library creates a truly 21st-century environment for students.

The McClay Library’s construction was the most significant building project at Queen’s since the iconic Lanyon Building in 1849 and was the result of the largest single fundraising initiative in the University’s history. The building was named in honour of Sir Allen McClay, the founder of the pharmaceutical company Almac and a major benefactor of Queen’s University and the Library.

If you're a current student, you can check on the library's occupancy before you arrive to ensure there's space to study.

The CS Lewis Reading Room

The iconic CS Lewis Reading Room is a serene reading space, decorated with glass-engraved inscriptions from the Belfast author's works as well as a hand-carved replica of the famous wardrobe door from The Chronicles of Narnia.

Situated in the tower area of Floor 1 of The McClay Library, this room provides a pleasant, well-lit reading area featuring glass engraved quotations from the author.

Wellbeing and Relaxation Space

Student wellbeing and accessibility matters to us, so we have created a Wellbeing and Relaxation Space in the library.

The area features cosy, wingback armchairs complete with footstools as well as beanbags. There is also no glare of fluorescent lighting and added adjustable reading lamps to help create a comfortable ambience. In addition, a Sun Lamp and a plasma globe light have been installed to provide natural sunlight and combat Seasonal Affective Disorder or Winter Depression.
