Student Engagement and Living Labs

Our educational programmes are increasingly focused on embracing the ethos of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals at a local, national and global level.

Many of these experiences are part of modules and programmes across the university. Students take part in hackathons, interdisciplinary challenges, and applied projects that address topics such as climate resilience, sustainable design, and community impact. These experiences build key GreenComp competencies and help students connect learning to action.

We also offer dedicated sustainability-focused programmes including:

Alongside your academic learning, there are a wide range of opportunities to get involved:

  • Our Living Labs programme transforms Queen’s campus and community into a space for students to drive change. Working in partnership with academic staff, Estates, and external organisations, students co-create and test practical solutions to real sustainability challenges, turning ideas into action and learning into impact. Learn more about Living Labs at Queen’s.
  • Through our partnership with Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, students can complete certified Carbon Literacy Training, building understanding of climate science, policy, and how individual and collective actions can drive change. Over 2,000 students and staff have taken part so far.
  • Our growing network of Student Sustainability Ambassadors, Sustainability Student Reps, and active student societies such as the Sustainable Healthcare Group are helping to lead change across campus, often working in partnership with academic and professional staff.

If you want to take part, have an idea, or are simply curious about where to begin, we would love to hear from you.
