Crescendo 2025

It’s been a milestone moment for Crescendo, a civic partnership programme from the Ulster Orchestra delivering high-quality music education to children in North and West Belfast.

Developed in collaboration with Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Greater Shankill Partnership, and Queen’s University’s Innovation Zones, the Crescendo programme works with four primary schools - Malvern, Wheatfield, Holy Evangelists’, and Good Shepherd - supporting children from P1 to P7 to develop musical skills, creativity, and confidence.

As the school year drew to a close, pupils celebrated their achievements with a series of joyful gala performances, culminating in a spectacular concert at the Ulster Hall on Thursday 13 June 2024. The event marked a significant moment for the programme, showcasing not just musical talent, but the power of partnership and community-led education.

The final concert drew the attention of senior political leaders, with First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly in attendance, alongside Junior Ministers Pam Cameron and Aisling Reilly. They joined proud parents, school staff, and community partners to witness P3 and P7 pupils from all four schools perform on stage with professional musicians from the Ulster Orchestra.

The event also marked a new chapter for Crescendo, with P7 pupils performing on brass instruments for the first time. In the lead-up to the concert, the children participated in cross-community rehearsals, building friendships, confidence, and shared pride in their musical journey.

At the heart of Crescendo is a dedicated team of music tutors, classroom teachers, community partners, and Ulster Orchestra staff who work tirelessly to create joyful and inclusive learning experiences for children. The success of this year’s gala events is a testament to their hard work and the transformative impact of sustained investment in creative education.

As the final notes rang out at the Ulster Hall, the standing ovation from hundreds in attendance wasn’t just for the music - it was for the children, their potential, and the community that has come together to help them thrive.
