“Labels around gender, age and migrant status can often come loaded with preconceptions of individuals. Our goal was to give these women a voice, to acknowledge their experiences, and to celebrate their contributions to our society. Art became the perfect medium for this expression, allowing for a deeply personal and emotional connection to the women involved.

Translating Age
Translating Age explored the experiences of older migrant women in Northern Ireland, using arts-based approaches and co-research approaches, where the women created their own arts projects.
The project, organised by Queen's Open Learning Programme, was led by Professor Tess Maginess and coordinated by Dr Federica Ferrieri. It brought together from a wide range of cultures and places, including China, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Malta, South Africa. Each woman had her unique story. Over 20 women enrolled and some 13 created their own projects.
The project aimed to reduce the inequality and exclusion of older migrant women; to offer capacity building and new skills to participants using an arts-based co-research approach; to build partnerships locally, regionally and internationally which foster intercultural understanding and understanding towards older people; to foster intergenerational working.
The participants projects - ranging from knitting to videography, from video recipes to poetry - were presented at two public events in May 2024, one in the Linen Hall Library and the other at Queen's University.
