The Tamil New Year, affectionately called Puthandu, marks the dawn of joy and renewal on the first day of the Hindu Solar Calendar. Picture-perfect kolams grace doorsteps, while homes resonate with the aromas of festive feasts. Chithrai, the inaugural month of the Hindu calendar, ignites with excitement as Tamil New Year unfolds with unparalleled fervour.

Each April 14th, my heart races with anticipation for Puthandu celebrations, a cherished tradition shared with family in India. Yet, as an international student, yearning for those beloved customs can tug at my heartstrings. The festive rituals, the aroma of mouth-watering delicacies wafting through the air, and the heartwarming reunions with loved ones are all cherished elements that define this auspicious occasion.

However, amidst such longing, a remarkable surprise awaited me this year. Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, Tamil New Year came alive at Elms BT1 accommodation! Despite the short notice, the event was meticulously planned and executed, and I found myself immersed in the festivities surrounded by a diverse array of people.

What struck me most was the beautiful tapestry of Tamil culture represented at the event. Not only were there individuals from Tamil Nadu and other parts of India, but also from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and beyond. Many of these attendees were students like myself, here in Queen's for various academic pursuits.

Although I didn't walk in with high expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and camaraderie that filled the room. By the end of the event, what started as a gathering of strangers had transformed into a tight-knit community of friends.

The sense of fulfillment and joy I experienced that day is something I'll carry with me for a lifetime. Celebrating Tamil New Year with newfound friends from around the world was an experience I'll cherish forever. Here's to the power of community and the beauty of unexpected connections!

Forging lasting bonds

Amidst laughter and camaraderie, we indulged in delightful games, immersing ourselves in the spirit of Puthandu. From reciting the timeless wisdom of Tirukural to mastering tongue twisters that left us in stitches, each moment was filled with joy and merriment. Group games like "Try Not to Laugh" brought us closer together, forging bonds that would last a lifetime.

Finally, in the quiet sanctuary of my room, I performed a humble poojai, offering prayers to the divine. With reverence in my heart, I sought blessings for the year ahead, enveloped in the sacredness of the moment.
