Dog Days of Summer
US student Marieke recently moved to Belfast with her dog Mara - check out her top dog friendly recommendations below!
One of the great things about Belfast is how dog friendly the city is. When I moved here from the US, I knew I couldn't leave my pup Mara behind and so I brought her along. Initially I was worried that I would be limited with what I would be able to do with her but after some exploration I realised that I need not worry; there are so many parks, shops, restaurants, and places to bring your dog.
Not to mention, having a furry friend to spend the summer with can be a great way to get outside and have fun! Below are some of my favourite spots to take Mara as well as a couple of tips for exploring Belfast with your dog.

Getting Outside
Belfast is wonderful because not only can you take a short bus ride to some beautiful hiking trails, but there are also lovely parks all over that you can take your dog for a play in.
Botanic Gardens
Botanic Gardens, located right behind the Lanyon Building at Queen's, is a great place to take your dog for a stroll. Bright blooms greet you as you walk past the green house and sometimes there is even an ice cream stand further down the road. If you want to stop and grab a coffee while you're there, The Coop is a great place to stop for a specialty coffee and one of their delicious tray bakes. Be sure to check out the rose garden as well!
Botanic Gardens
Ormeau Park
Sprawling and gorgeous, Ormeau Park is one of the most popular spots to take your furry friend. Dotted with park benches, gazebos, and thick with foliage, it is truly a wonderful greenspace in the south of the city. I often take Mara to play fetch for a bit and stop at one of the many cafes on Ormeau Road for a bite to eat afterward. Many of the cafes there have outdoor spaces where you and your dog can relax.
Greenville Park
Greenville is a great place to take your dog. With lots of winding paths and open space, there is a lot of room to play fetch and sniff around. There is even an outdoor public gym, basketball court, and tennis courts.
One of the great things about Orangefield Park is that it is part of the Connswater Community Greenway which connects several parks including Flora Street Play Park, and Clarawood Millenium Park. Another great greenway in the area is the Comber Greenway, which is close by and great for a long walk across East Belfast.
Belmont Park
A personal favourite and one I take Mara to everyday is Belmont Park in East Belfast. This park is behind CYIMS tennis and has big open fields for a good game of Frisbee or fetch. It is also stunning this time of year as the many cherry blossoms and daffodils located in the park are in full bloom.
Additionally, this is a park where you'll find many friendly, off lead dogs, so if your dog is one for a romp, this is the place to go. This park is a bit on the small side though so if you're up for a long stroll just be mindful that this might be a bit shorter than you would like.
Cave Hill Hike
Are you and the dog up for a bit more of a challenge than a park? Then Cave Hill is the place to go. Located a short 20-minute bus ride from the city centre, Cave Hill is a gorgeous hike with even more gorgeous views. Starting from Belfast Castle, an icon of Belfast, you and your dog will love walking the winding paths and exploring the quiet hills.
Some of the highlights are the views of the city, the bay, and the mountains further out. I like to bring a small lunch and picnic while Mara explores some of the rocks and grassy slopes. If you didn't pack a lunch, not to worry! Hey Darlin’ Coffee is at the bottom of the trail and is great to fuel up after hiking. They have food, coffee, outdoor seating, and are super dog friendly.
Tip 1: If you don't have a car or don't want to rent one, fear not! Translink DOES allow dogs on the Ulster (blue) and Metro (pink) buses. Just be sure that the bus isn't too full, and your dog can sit quietly, preferably under a seat or on your lap.
Feeling Hungry?
In Belfast, there are tons of cafes and restaurants that not only have excellent food but also allow our furry friends. Below I have listed some of my favourites but there is plenty more to choose from.
Bullhouse East
Hands down, one of my favourite places to hang out and bring Mara to is Bullhouse East. This tap room and brewery has an excellent atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of space for dogs.
Open every day with an extensive selection of beer, cider, and wine, everyone is sure to find something they’ll enjoy. Bullhouse is also home to Viti Pizza, little known but arguably one of the best pizzas in Belfast. They even do a vegan pizza!
Jeggy Nettle
The Jeggy Nettle is a great spot for a quick pint, located near Queen's. Dog friendly both indoors and out, they offer a great selection of spirits and beers, wines and ciders. They also have interesting memorabilia and funky booths to sit in, which is perfect for a quiet afternoon.
Established
Located in the Cathedral Quarter, Established is an amazing cafe that roasts their own coffee. Coffee not your thing? They also have tea options including matcha and chai. In addition to superb drinks, they also make excellent brunch food. My favourite is poached eggs with greens, halloumi, and their fresh sourdough. A great way to enjoy this spot is to bring a book or journal and spend some time with your pup enjoying a cup(pa).
Trademarket
Can't decide what to eat? Trademarket is the place for you (and your dog). A semi outdoor market located near the heart of the city, Trademarket is the cooler cousin of your local farmer's market. With two built-in bars and over 7 food stalls, Trademarket is the place to be with plenty of seating.
They even hold special dog days for meet and greets! My favourite is getting the Nashville hot chicken burger at Baps. They also have some lovely shops surrounding the market with clothing, natural spa items, and a specialty liquor store.
Tip 2: Buying a collapsable water dish is a great way to keep your pup hydrated while walking around all day. While many places are dog friendly, not all of them will have water dishes and it can be super helpful to have your own.
Re(tail) Therapy
This boutique dog store located in East Belfast is one of my favourite pet stores in the city. With a whole range of items from treats and food to toys and accessories, they have it all. Mara loves to stop in to have a quick snack from one of the incredibly friendly staff and we inevitably always leave with a new toy.
In addition to doggy items, they also have things for humans as well. This includes cute key chains, mugs, and even some sweet treats to nibble on while you look around. They also have an espresso machine if you want to grab a quick coffee on the way out!
Tip 3: Walking around with your pup can be a great way to give them new stimulation and excitement. Just be mindful of your dog and ensure they have a few quiet rests throughout to make sure they aren't overloaded with new smells and sights. Taking a break is important for you and your dog. Most of all though, make sure to have fun! Happy walking!
