In this fireside chat, John Turner interviews Russell Napier, one of the world's leading experts on global financial markets, about his experiences in Asia as well as Asia's future in the global economy.

Russell Napier is a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Cambridge. He is author of The Solid Ground, an independently published, global macro investment report, and founder of ERIC, the platform for the sale of individually priced investment research.  Prior to this, he was a consultant global macro strategist with CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets for almost twenty years.  In 2014, Russell established The Library of Mistakes in Edinburgh and is its current Keeper. The Library is a charitable venture and is a first class resource for anyone wishing to learn the lessons of the past as a guide to our financial and economic future. The Library of Mistakes is a global venture, with its first branch in Pune, India.

Russell has recently published his second book The Asian Financial Crisis 1995-98. The book charts Russell Napier’s personal journey during the crisis as he wrote daily for institutional investors about an increasingly uncertain future. Relying on contemporaneous commentary, it charts the mistakes and successes of investors in the battle for the survival in Asia from 1995-98. This book is not just a guide for investors navigating financial markets, but also an explanation of how this crisis created the foundations of an age of debt that has changed the modern world.

Russell’s first book, Anatomy of A Bear: Lessons From Wall Street’s Four Great Bottoms, published in 2005, was named as an investment read of the year in the Financial Times and was described as a ‘cult classic’ by the same newspaper.

Russell is interviewed by John Turner, Long Run Institute director, Professor at Queen’s Business School, and author of ‘Boom and Bust: A Global History of Financial Bubbles’. In their conversation, they discuss Russell’s new book, the benefit of having a long run perspective, the rise of China as a superpower, and Russell’s love of financial history.
