The Centre of Canadian Studies (CSS)

The Centre aims to promote a better understanding of Canadian society, culture and environment within both the University and wider community. It works across disciplines, connecting research in Canada to broader international research agendas.

Based within the School of Natural and Built Environment, the Centre draws together research expertise across the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences at Queen’s.

Facilities

The Centre has dedicated office space for visiting academics and postgraduate students based in the School of Natural and Built Environment (Elmwood Building). This also includes a small library of Canadian resources donated by the Government of Canada and academic staff.

The University has a long established connection with Canada, reflecting both historical connections through the Irish diaspora and contemporary economic links. The University Library has built up one of the largest academic resources in the UK and Ireland to support teaching and research in Canadian Studies, with outstanding print and online collections on all aspects of Canadian life, culture and the environment across the domains of the arts, the humanities, the social sciences and sciences.

Study Abroad - Canadian Exchanges

Queen’s University has a number of Canadian undergraduate exchange partners and regularly sends and receives students in each direction every year in many different subject areas.  Our current exchange partners are:

Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario
http://www.queensu.ca/

University of Alberta, Edmonton
https://ualberta.ca/

Carleton University, Ottawa, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies
https://carleton.ca/geography/

Further details on the application process can be found on the Student Gateway.

The School of Natural and Built Environment also has an exchange agreement with the University of New Brunswick and its Interdepartmental Archaeology Programme.  This offers an opportunity for two students from each institution to take a a semester of studies at the partner institution. Tuition fees at the host institution are waived, but students from Queen’s going to New Brunswick will have to take out UNB's compulsory health insurance.   The School of Natural and Built Environment normally provides Queen’s students a travel grant to cover most of the air fare.  Further details and how to apply are available at: http://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/NBE/International/
