Adam Smyth: Regional Business Manager, KEENAN
Adam Smyth, BSc Agricultural Technology graduate, shares how his placement with KEENAN and Alltech led to a graduate role.

All about Adam's time at Queen's
During my final year at Queen’s University Belfast, I became a dedicated rower. I joined Queen’s University Rowing Club to pursue my passion for sport. The challenging sport required power and grace, physical and mental strength, calmness and intensity. Through intense daily training, I grew and developed in multiple areas. The training consisted of a mixture of water, erg and gym sessions, equating to around 20 hours per week. I rose on weekday mornings at 4:30am, drove to the boathouse and was on the water for 6:30am—just in time for the sunrise.
I was honoured to be awarded Captain of the two boats I participated in, the Eight and the Four. After travelling to Newcastle Upon Tyne to compete against British universities at BUCS Head, we placed fourth in both categories out of 30 universities. With only seconds separating us from first place, we were inspired and invigorated to go further.
We also travelled to Banyoles in Spain for a training camp. The lake had previously been used in the Olympic Games for rowing. Training was extremely intense, with many kilometres covered daily. The volume of food eaten was colossal; coupled with tiredness, it was proof of the heightened training regime.
All about Adam's Current Role
Alongside the personal growth I’ve experienced through rowing, my academic journey in Agriculture at Queen’s has also driven significant professional development, thanks to the invaluable industry opportunities I was able to pursue. I would not be in the position I am now, having secured the job of KEENAN Regional Business Manager for Northern Ireland, without completing my year’s work placement. From completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture with a year’s placement on a dairy farm, I understood the value and importance of securing a high-quality placement.
