Talented students honoured at School of Biological Sciences annual prize-giving

26 June, 2025

Held as part of the graduation ceremony, the event celebrated outstanding student achievement, academic excellence, and contributions to research and school community.

On Thursday 26th June the School of Biological Sciences and Institute for Global Food Security was proud to host Graduates and guests as they celebrated their wonderful achievements.

Students enjoyed light refreshments before a prizegiving session, acknowledging the most outstanding achievements from this cohort, presented by Interim Head of School of Biological Sciences, Professor Nigel Scollan. A huge congratulations to all our worthy prize winners. We also extend our appreciation and gratitude to all of our sponsors.

Alex Reid - Safefood Essay Prize 

Best Essay in Food Science and Nutrition.

 

Caoimhe Lynch - Royal Society of Biology Top Student

Highest scoring student in an RSB accredited degree.

 

Diarmaid Duffy - Gibson Scholarship

Highest scoring student in their primary degree.

 

Erin Murphy - Dai Roberts Memorial Medal 

Highest Honours project mark in Marine Biology.

 

Eve Atkinson - Royal Society of Biology Top Project (Accreditation BSc) 

Best project in an RSB BSc accredited degree.

 

Matthew Nash - Tim Bramley Award

Highest Scoring Biochemist (Best overall performance in the final examination, in the Biochemistry pathways, in module BIO3203 and/or BIO3304).

 

Finn Helferty - Runner Up, David Timson Prize for Outstanding Commitment

 

Georgia Miles - Ulster Immunology Prize 

Highest Scoring Immunology Student.

 

Hollie McGown - Shirodaria Prize AND John Quinn Memorial Medal 

Best mark in the final year Medical Microbiology module and Highest Honours project mark in Microbiology.

 

Izzy Young  - Arthur Muskett Prize 

Highest degree classification Environmental Management.

 

Jari McLeod - Runner Up, David Timson Prize for Outstanding Commitment

 

Joel McCluggage - Flax Development Committee Award 

Best final year Research Project in areas related to Agriculture.

 

Kiran Joy - McGraw Hill Award

Top Microbiology Student in Level 1.

 

Lana Bothwell - Yakult Top Project AND Food Standards Agency (NI) Award

Best Food Science and Nutrition project and Top Food Science and Nutrition Student in Stage 3.

 

Marcus Bryan - UK Microbiology Society Undergraduate Stage 2 Award

Best Performing Student in stage 2.

 

Mark Kissick  - Alan Kirke Memorial Prize AND Old Agrarian Prize 

Highest Scoring Agricultural Technology student.

 

Millie Nunn - David Timson Prize for Outstanding Commitment AND The Denis Lynn Scholarship for Sustainable Food Innovation

Shown outstanding commitment and considered inspirational to others. 

 

Niamh Heatley - Royal Society of Biology Top Project (Accreditation MSci) 

Best project in an RSB MSci accredited degree.

 

Qihua Duan - PGR Academic Excellence Prize

Highest quality of a first-author paper, published or in-press.  Judged by a School panel using the REF scoring criteria.

 

Reece Mills - Dunville Prize

Highest scoring student that returns to do a PhD.
