SAXS/WAXS

A unique facility for Northern Ireland

The Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) Facility offers the ability to directly investigate the porosity, orientation, size, shape, structure and crystallinity of nanostructures. 

Our instrument is the SAXSpoint 700 from Anton Paar, which is a state-of-the-art laboratory beamline offering unparalleled capabilities in SAX/WAXS/GISAXS/RheoSAXS analysis. It is built to deliver synchrotron-grade results, resolving nanostructures up to 620 nm, with minimal effort and short exposure times.

  • Primux 100 micro microfocus X-ray source (Cu)
  • 2D EIGER2 R series HPC detector
  • High-resolution SAXS and WAXS
  • Q range of 0.01 to 49.3 nm-1 
  • Resolve structures up to 620nm
  • Temperature range of -150 °C to 500 °C (accuracy of ±0.1 °C)
  • Large adaptive measurement chamber
  • Fully evacuated flight path for minimal background scattering
  • Intuitive and user-friendly software for experiment controls and data analysis

Sample Environments

Temperature-Controlled Stages (-150 to 500 °C)

  • Use with standard sample holders for liquids, pastes, powders and solids

GISAXS stage with heating/cooling option (-150 to 500 °C)

  • Investigation of nanostructured surfaces and thin film samples
  • Ideal for mesoporous thin films, surface-deposited nanoparticles, metal deposits on oxide surfaces, soft matter systems, and biological materials attached to surfaces
  • Samples can be tilted and rotated

Tensile Stage with heating/cooling option (-150 to 350 °C)

  • The only commercially available stage specially designed for in-situ SAXS/WAXS studies of stress/strain phenomena
  • For investigating fibres, foils, and thin films
  • Studies at forces between 0.01 N and 600 N

RheoSAXS module

  • Study structural and rheological properties simultaneously
  • Measure parallel or perpendicular to flow direction
