LOCATION: Moot Court, School of Law

As violence in Israel and Palestine intensifies and calls for a ceasefire continue to be ignored, how can violence be met with non-violence and injustices be addressed through peaceful interventions?

In this lunchtime seminar two Palestinian scholars will draw on their extensive work and research in the region.

Professor Mohammed Abu-Nimer will explore the role of religious identity on war and peace in Israel and Palestine. Professor Abu-Nimer is Abdulaziz Said Chair for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the International School of International Service, American University, Washington, USA. He is Leverhulme visiting Professor at Coventry University. He published extensively and worked internationally on issues such as peacebuilding and religion, conflict resolution, interfaith dialogue, civic education in the Arab world.

Dr Marwan Darweish will present on the role of unarmed civil protection in Palestine. Dr Darweish is Associate Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at the Center for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University, UK. His key research interests are in nonviolent popular protest, everyday resistance, cultural resistance and civilian protection.

Dr Erika Jiménez is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the School of Law and Mitchell Institute Fellow: Rights and Social Justice, Queen’s University Belfast.
