Bio: Manni Ardzejewska graduated from QUB Law School with a JD degree in 2018. She is currently in her second year of a PhD in Health Law at Lund University, Sweden. With a background in sociology and gender studies, her research interests in law include end of life care, gender and critical theory.
Blurb: Manni will present an overview of her PhD research into the law of end of decision making. This project addresses law as it is constructed by legal doctrine and law as it is understood and applied by healthcare practitioners. In this way, it seeks to utilise legal consciousness theory as a way to bridge the ‘gap’ often identified between the law and healthcare practice and to develop a comprehensive understanding of end of life regulations.
Further, the project will employ a case study of people dying with dementia whose difficulties in forming and expressing end of life wishes provides a springboard to challenge the primacy of the autonomy model in this area. This critical perspective will be informed by vulnerability theory. The project is framed by a comparative approach between the law of Sweden and New South Wales (Australia). She looks forward to the opportunity to share her progress and hear your thoughts.
