PhD in Film and Visual Studies (Creative Practice)

Sarajevo FilmStudents opting for the creative practice route will produce a body of supervised practice-based work designed for exhibition, accompanied by a dissertation of up to 50,000 words intended to assist them in contextualising their work within the broader field of visual culture.

Each student is allocated a first and second supervisor with access to a wide range of subject expertise.  In addition, students participate in a series of research workshops designed to both assist them in writing their dissertations and in acquiring the technical skills needed to develop and deliver their practice projects.

All registered students have access to the School’s extensive film and imaging production facilities as well as to first class libraries at QUB.

We particularly welcome applications from those working as teachers/lecturers in the media arts area and the programme aims to assist your professional development as researchers, teachers and creative practitioners.

We are particularly interested in applications in the following areas:

  • Documentary film
  • Film History and Historigraphy
  • Experimental film and multimedia
  • Ethnographic film
  • Sound Design
  • New media and aesthetic practices in the moving image 

 

Duration:  3 years full-time, 6 years part-time.

Entrance Requirements:  Normally a first or good upper second class degree in relevant subject area (or EU/US equivalent).

Current Research Areas:  As noted in MPhil.

Title of research area:  Film and Visual Studies.

Content:  Specified research area.

Funding:  As noted in MPhil.

Careers:  Media/Journalism; Film production; Arts Management; Curation; Academic/teaching.
