Talk: Brendan Behan in Paris

Following her award-winning RTÉ documentary, ‘Brendan Behan in Paris’, Dr Deirdre McMahon discusses her PhD thesis and the importance of Behan’s time in mid-century Paris in understanding his work.

Dr McMahon has worked as a producer and project manager in radio, theatre, and film, including as company co-ordinator for Riverdance and co-producer of the feature film Silent Grace. Deirdre holds a BA in English and an MA in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama from UCD. She was awarded a PhD for her thesis on Brendan Behan and European Modernism (UCD). Deirdre has contributed essays on Behan's work to the Eugene O’Neill Review and to the volume edited by John McCourt, Reading Brendan Behan. On-screen contributions include to "Kathleen Behan" for the TV series Máthair (TG4).

The award-winning documentary Brendan Behan in Paris was Dr McMahon's first production with the Documentary on One team, and won the New York Festivals Radio Awards 2020 Finalist Award Winner for Culture & The Arts.

In this talk, she will discuss Behan's philosophical, personal and literary development in post-war Paris and why it is vital in comprehending the importance of his work.
