Athena SWAN at EEECS
Our Action Plan

Our 2019-2023 Action Plan outlines our commitment to achieving the aims of the Athena SWAN Charter in addressing gender inequalities and embedding inclusive cultures across higher education and research.

As part of our Action Plan, we have set a number of strategic targets which underscore our continued dedication towards fostering an inclusive and diverse community across the School of EEECS. Below, you can see some of the actions that we have outlined in our Action Plan to illustrate how we are working towards meeting these targets.

  • Embedding Athena SWAN and Gender Equality in EEECS
    • Continued roll-out of staff training in Unconscious Bias and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
    • Staff engagement through annual events in our school calendar to celebrate Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
    • Improving our understanding staff attitudes to gender equality initiatives through improved data analysis and training tools.
    • Engaging with academic and industry stakeholders to share best practices and communicate our commitment towards gender inclusion across sectors.
  • Advancing Recruitment and Career Progression of Women & Minority Gender Staff
    • Introduction of a PhD Teaching Apprenticeship Scheme to support women and minority gender PhDs to enter into academia.
    • Continued annual delivery of our EEECS Women and Minority Gender Leadership Programme in partnership with the William J Clinton Leadership Institute.
    • Monitoring of language used on our website and recruitment advertisements to ensure gender neutrality, as well as ensuring that we clearly communicate our family-friendly and flexible working policies.
    • Ensuring that women and minority gender role models at EEECS are celebrated across our website and recruitment materials.
  • Advancing Recruitment and Support of Women & Minority Gender Students
    • Targeted recruitment of women and minority gender students to EEECS undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through strategic marketing and the promotion of our inclusive student initatives.
    • Continued roll-out of engagement initiatives to encourage girls in primary and post-primary schools to consider STEM subjects for future study or employment.
    • Increasing the number of women and minority gender role models and speakers who present and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students during their programmes.
    • Continued improvement and monitoring of inclusion measures across student initiatives through regular focus groups with students.
  • Enhancing Culture within EEECS for All
    • Continued improvement and monitoring of our people practices to ensure that we are consistent in our alignment and commitment to Athena SWAN principles.
    • Identify our committees of influence and ensure that women and minority gender staff are represented on these.
    • Roll-out of our Staff Mental Health Ambassador Programme to ensure clear signposting to internal support services and that training is available for staff who wish to attain certification in Mental Health First Aid.
    • Clear dissemination of information around maternity support for women and birthing people across EEECS, ensuring that line managers understand their responsibilities and have access to information they require.
