New Mozambique scholarship launched at Queen’s

A new postgraduate scholarship at Queen’s University will offer students from Mozambique the opportunity to further their education at the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen’s (HAPP).

Sponsored by Kenmare Resources plc (Kenmare), the Kenmare Resources PhD Studentship will offer a transformative educational experience to an eligible postgraduate student who is resident in Mozambique, has Mozambican nationality and is interested in pursuing a PhD in History, Anthropology, Philosophy or Politics (HAPP) at Queen’s.

Dr Eric Morier-Genoud, Reader in African History and Associate Director of Internationalisation in HAPP and the lead academic for the studentship, said: “It is an immense pleasure to see Kenmare and Queen’s University come together to support the training of academics in Africa. This scholarship will contribute importantly to strengthening the pool of highly-trained university professors in the humanities and social sciences at universities in Mozambique”.

Head of the School of HAPP at Queen’s, Professor James Davis, added: “We are delighted that Kenmare Resources will be supporting a student from Mozambique, through providing a full PhD scholarship at Queen's University Belfast. This exciting partnership with Kenmare serves to highlight the international value of higher education skills and opportunity.”

Former Queen’s student, Kenmare Founder and Managing Director, Michael Carvill stated: “Kenmare Resources is delighted to support this great initiative championed by Dr Eric Morier Genoud; it builds on our on-going education programme within Mozambique where we have built more than 90 classrooms, a technical school and are sponsoring undergraduate bursaries to the local universities.

“As an alumnus of Queen’s, I am particularly proud to have played a small part in setting up this scheme for Mozambican scholars.”

Speaking about the importance of the scholarship, Director of Alumni Engagement and Philanthropy, Eddie Friel said: “Providing students with support and pathways to change and improve their lives is what Queen’s is all about. We are proud of the opportunities that philanthropy can offer people from across the world to study at Queen’s and make their impact on society.

“We are extremely grateful to former Queen’s student Michael Carvill and Kenmare Resources plc for providing this life-changing opportunity for a student to further their education and add to the doctoral community in Mozambique.”

The studentship will cover PhD fees, a stipend as well as travel and relocation costs.

Applications will open on 21 May and close on 21 June 2024.
