History

Student writing at desk with Bookshelf

History at Queen’s is an internationally respected centre for historical research and teaching, with a chronological range from antiquity to the present.

We have specialisms that range from the Ancient and Medieval World through to modern Africa, Asia, Britain, Ireland, Europe and North America. Our research community is known for its academic excellence and impact in society. This factor, together with our reputation for collegiality, friendliness and hospitality ensure that Queen’s historians regularly host major international conferences and public-facing events.

Our commitment to innovative teaching has witnessed more than a dozen teaching awards won by Queen’s historians in recent years.

Research expertise and projects range from those engaged with intellectual history through to public history focused projects with immediate impact outside academia.

"Welcome to History at Queen's – a subject that had been taught at the university since 1845. We provide a broad undergraduate and postgraduate programme from the ancient world to the present day. Our courses cover Irish, British, American, European, African, and Asian History, and themes such as culture, gender, politics, race, and religion. The links between academic and popular interpretations of the past are considered in public history courses that include internship opportunities. We also offer specialist PhD opportunities across a wide range of topics and areas of supervision." Professor Andrew Holmes
Head of History
