Politics and International Relations

Bertie Ahern, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, George Mitchell on stage for the Good Friday Talk

Politics at Queen’s assembles one of the largest and most diverse group of scholars in the discipline across the UK and Ireland covering almost all areas of politics and international relations.

We offer a comprehensive range of academic approaches, including political theory, conflict studies, comparative politics, public administration and policy, and international studies. Our work includes tracking the development of local, national and international governing institutions, foreign policy analysis and examining major global political developments. Our wide range of regional expertise includes Europe and the USA, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

"Politics is everywhere. It enables, constrains and shapes decisions about how we understand and organise our societies and collectively prepare for the future. Our academic staff represent the discipline of Political Science and International Relations in the widest sense, from the global to the local, across different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. Furthermore, Queen’s University Belfast has a long tradition of studying the intersection of complex questions about sovereignty, identity and power-sharing and provides an ideal place to study politics." Professor Muiris MacCarthaigh FAcSS
Head of Politics and International Relations

“I’m doing my PhD in Politics and I’m looking at different ways that emancipation is contended with in Chechnya. The case of Chechnya interested me the most because there is a lot of opinions about what is happening there and why. I wanted to explore that a bit for myself and come to my own conclusions. Here at Queen’s, I feel like I really have the opportunity to take my research where I want to take it and to explore different areas that are interesting to me.” Kathryn
