Virtual Histology Laboratory

Our virtual microscopy lab is used by Medical, Dentistry and Biomedical Science students. Histology and pathology teaching was previously delivered using microscope slides and brightfield microscopy. We now use state-of-the-art virtual microscopy teaching. Using computers and Philips Tutor software, our students are able to view whole slide imaging technology at diagnostic resolution allowing them to identify and analyse histological and pathological tissues. The inclusion of electron micrographs, photographs and X‐rays, which can be accessed alongside the virtual slides, allow modules to be specifically tailored to the needs of students on different degree pathways.

Virtual microscopy also has the benefit of delivering histology courses to students off campus. On‐line virtual microscopy courses can be accessed by students anytime allowing them to view digital slides that would have traditionally been restricted to the laboratory.
