Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Access to high-quality business education is key to building a sustainable world.

See how we prioritise diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to support our mission to educate and explore for the benefit of business and society.

Recognising the importance of diverse voices, who are encouraged to speak up and made to feel as though they belong, is fundamental to creating an inclusive environment at Queen's Business School. As a leading education provider, it is our duty to model a positive work space for everyone. Professor Shuang Ren

DEIB in Education

We are committed to integrating DEIB considerations into teaching and learning. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we map our modules and programmes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5 Gender Equality and SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities. For example, in our postgraduate module on AI in Business and Society, students examine the nature and impact of bias within algorithmic systems. In Human Resource Management, students engage with industry experts and professional bodies to learn about current issues related to DEIB in the workplace. Together, through education, we can help to build equitable, inclusive, and sustainable organisations.

Dr Bahareh Ansari and Dr Laura Steele were awarded the Teaching and Learning Forum SOTL Seedcorn Funding for their project which will assess whether generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (such as ChatGPT) are beneficial or detrimental to student learning outcomes.

These technologies could provide multiple benefits to students from diverse backgrounds, such as translation and writing assistance to international students, personal tutoring, alternative learning, and organisation strategies for students with learning disabilities. On the other hand, using these technologies might further exacerbate the existing inequalities by providing more benefits to those with more robust English and technical backgrounds.

By examining a diverse group of students’ use of generative AI in a real-world assessment and their reflection on this experience, this project will explore some of the differential impacts of these technologies.

DEIB in Research

Recent examples of research focused on the benefits of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging include Dr Sajia Ferdous' work on the challenges faced by older working women from ethnic minority groups; Dr Wojdan Omran's research on female entrepreneurship under patriarchial regimes; and Dr Grainne Kelly and Dr Sajia Ferdous' intersectional study of talent management through a feminist lens.

Sistersin
DEIB in Society

We promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging through all our engagement activities, including hosting events, working with businesses, engaging with policy makers, supporting communities, and developing resources.

For example, in 2023 the School became an official sponsor of SistersIn, a leadership programme in Northern Ireland aimed at young women. A number of our senior academic and professional services staff act as mentors to young women to help develop them personally and professionally.

DEIB Forum

This is a dedicated platform aimed at enhancing the experiences of international students. It brings together staff, students, and external partners to discuss best practices, share insights, and develop actionable strategies to support international students' academic and social integration. Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive breakout sessions, the forum fosters a collaborative environment to address the unique challenges faced by international students and to promote a more inclusive campus culture.

This initiative reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported. By focusing on the diverse needs of its international student body, the DEIB Forum plays a crucial role in shaping policies and practices that enhance student well-being and success. It aligns with the school's broader mission to integrate DEIB principles into all aspects of education and community engagement, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
