Year in Enterprise

Are you a Queen's Business School student approaching your placement year? Are you an existing or aspiring entrepreneur? We are now offering students the opportunity to take a year in enterprise instead of a traditional placement.

This means during the placement year you will get the opportunity to work on building your own business, with support.

What support will I get?
  • QBS Entrepreneur in Residence to provide advice and guidance as you progress with your business idea.
  • Business Discovery Workshops, in partnership with SU Enterprise and the QUB Entrepreneur in Residence, helping you to get creative and turn challenges into opportunities. Occurring once a semester, these workshops are aligned with Enterprise SU competitions.
  • Hot-desk Co-Working Space available at the QBS Student Hub and SU Enterprise office.
  • Community Collider regular events where students from different schools and faculties across the university come together to connect and share ideas.

Scholarships are available

Eligibility

  • You must be a student of Queen's Business School.
  • Your degree pathway must allow you to take a placement year.
  • The placement year must be the academic year directly following your application for a scholarship.
  • You must not be under any visa restrictions for running your own business in Northern Ireland during your placement year.*
  • You must have a viable business idea that you can work productively on during placement year.
  • You must meet School requirements for taking a year in enterprise placement.

* Under current visa regulations (correct as of February 2024), students on a Student Visa are not allowed to run their own business making them ineligible for this scholarship.

Scholarship details
  • The scholarship award comprises of £13,000 in total, per student.
  • This will be distributed in three instalments across the academic year.
  • The scholarship money is intended to cover the student's costs of living for the year rather than business expenses.

Application Process

  1. A discussion with Jill McGrath from the Careers and Work Placement team to assess the viability of your business idea and discuss financial support. You will either be 'approved in principle' or 'not approved' for the year in enterprise. Apply via form at the bottom of this page.
  2. Students who have been 'approved in principle' will then be able to apply for the Year in Enterprise Scholarship if they wish.
  3. The scholarship application will be considered by a Queen's Business School panel made up of members from both the Undergraduate Education Committee and the Business Engagement Committee.
  4. If successful at this stage, the student will be invited to interview with the panel. Interviews are expected to take place in April 2024.
  5. The QBS panel will allocate the scholarships to successful applicants, starting in June, pending QBS requirements for taking a year in enterprise placement being met.

The best way to predict the future? Create it.

Start on your entrepreneurial journey today. Applications close at 5pm on Friday 29 March 2024. Express an interest using the form below.
