Postgraduate: Purav's Experience in MSc Accounting and Finance

Purav Shah is an MSc Accounting and Finance student from India.

Why did you choose to study this subject?

I chose to pursue an MSc in Accounting and Finance because I have a strong passion for the field and a clear career goal in mind. My ultimate aspiration is to become a forensic accountant, a role that requires a deep understanding of financial analysis, investigative skills, and a solid foundation in accounting and finance. To achieve this goal, I recognized the importance of acquiring advanced knowledge and expertise in accounting and finance, which is why I decided to pursue a master's degree. This program provides me with the opportunity to delve deeper into the subject matter and gain a comprehensive understanding of financial principles, auditing, and investigative techniques.

Furthermore, I am considering taking the CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) exam and obtaining my ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification to further enhance my skills and credentials in the field of forensic accounting. These certifications will not only validate my expertise but also open up additional career opportunities in forensic accounting and financial fraud detection.

Why did you decide to undertake postgraduate study at Queen's University, instead of a different institution?

I chose Queen's University for my MSc Accounting and Finance studies because of its impressive combination of factors that promise a stellar education and a robust foundation for my future career. The program's accreditation by ACCA, a globally esteemed professional accounting body, assures me of a curriculum aligned with the highest industry standards, enhancing my career prospects. Queen's affiliation with the CIMA accelerated route offers flexibility to specialize in management accounting, aligning with my career goals. The university's commitment to engaging industry professionals who provide real-world insights and networking opportunities is invaluable.

Moreover, the potential for professional exemptions based on academic achievements is a time-saving advantage. Queen's University's top ranking in Graduate Prospects further cements its appeal, and the opportunity to learn from a dedicated teaching staff completes my confidence in this choice for my academic and career journey.

How has this course helped towards, or shaped, your future career goals?

This course has significantly contributed to my future career goals in accounting and finance by fostering important qualities. Through presentations and group projects, I've enhanced skills such as time management, teamwork, and discipline, as meeting deadlines and collaborating effectively were essential. Moreover, I've had the opportunity to take on leadership roles during group projects, further developing my leadership capabilities.

Overall, this course has not only provided academic knowledge but also shaped me into a well-rounded professional, ready to excel in the accounting and finance industry with strong skills and the ability to work effectively in teams and manage my time efficiently.

What were the highlights of your course and your time here at Queen's University?

Throughout my academic pursuit, I remained deeply engrossed in my coursework, appreciating the well-structured curriculum meticulously designed to optimize our learning potential. This encompassed a spectrum of educational elements, including weekly quizzes, assignments meticulously crafted to augment my report writing abilities, semester examinations, and a range of collaborative endeavours, such as group presentations and collective assignments.

Concurrently, I actively engaged in a variety of enriching educational programs and courses. Notably, I immersed myself in the Degree Plus program, a concise three-day initiative meticulously orchestrated by Queen's University. These programs were profoundly advantageous, not only in terms of augmenting my academic acumen but also in fine-tuning my soft skills. Additionally, I seized the opportunity to participate in the Carbon Literacy course presented by Queen's Business School, further enriching the breadth and depth of my educational journey.

If you could give one piece of advice to potential applicants to this programme, what would it be?

I would like to offer a valuable piece of advice to incoming students: maintain discipline and stay focused on your studies. Prioritize your academic responsibilities as your primary commitment. Remember that your parents have invested their hard-earned money to provide you with access to top-notch facilities and the opportunity to learn from outstanding teachers. So, complete your studies diligently.
