Postgraduate Research: Faisal’s Passion for Shared Leadership
Faisal Saleh Alsabaan is a third year PhD student conducting research focused on shared leadership.
Faisal completed a BSc in International Business in Saudi Arabia and an MSc in Business Administration in Canada before coming to Belfast.
Why did you decide to study at the School?
I chose to do a PhD in Management here because of the School’s well-known reputation for research, and ongoing contribution in the field of leadership. I was also drawn to the expertise of the faculty members at the School.
Tell us about your research?
My PhD project investigates the impact of shared leadership on employees’ desirable attitudes and behaviours in Saudi Arabia, such as citizenship behaviour, and team performance, including the effectiveness of psychological capital.
How do you see your research being applicable in the world of business?
In order for any organisation to sustain profitability and productivity, strategic and effective leadership is needed. In my research I see leadership from a different angle, where it should be shared rather than depending on the one appointed leader. Shared leadership is practiced by the team as whole, and it will create a strong, supportive internal environment to enhance productivity and increase the level of autonomy and self-efficacy among team members. This shared leadership style may create new organisational dynamics that could be beneficial to everyone.
What is your favourite part of studying a PhD at the School?
There are many aspects of being part of the School PhD team that I enjoy. Firstly, the PhD environment provided by the School for the PhD students. Secondly, the programs provided by the PhD directory, and the ongoing seminars on different subject fields that help me to widen my field of knowledge.
