Undergraduate: Eoin's Study Abroad Experience in Copenhagen

Eoin McLaughlin is a BSc Finance with a Year in Industry student, who recently took part in a three-week study abroad trip to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Where did you study abroad and how long for?

I was in Copenhagen from 21 June to 19 July 2024, and had the opportunity to study at Copenhagen Business School for three weeks, thanks to a partnership developed with Queen's Business School.

Tell us about your study abroad experience.

I took the Undergraduate Corporate Finance course. During my study abroad experience at Copenhagen Business School, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the field of corporate finance through an intensive three-week course. The programme focused on key financial concepts and their applications in an international context.

I studied a range of topics, including the main characteristics of corporations and their financial structures, the relationship between accounting information and corporate finance Interest rates and the time value of money, valuation of bonds and stocks, investment decision-making processes, financing decisions, including capital structure theory and the cost of capital.

What areas of your study abroad programme did you find most rewarding?

The most rewarding areas of my study abroad program at Copenhagen Business School were those that bridged the gap between accounting information and corporate finance, as well as the topics of investment decision-making and the time value of money.

These subjects resonated deeply with me due to my strong interest in understanding how financial data informs strategic decisions within corporations. I found it incredibly fulfilling to explore the intricate relationship between accounting information and corporate finance.

This area provided valuable insights into how financial statements and accounting data are crucial for effective financial analysis and decision-making. The practical applications of these concepts were fascinating and directly aligned with my career aspirations in finance and investment banking.

Additionally, delving into the principles of investment decision-making and the time value of money was particularly engaging. Understanding how investment choices are made and the critical importance of evaluating the future value of cash flows equipped me with essential skills for assessing potential investments and making informed financial decisions.

These topics not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also fuelled my passion for finance, making them the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of my study abroad experience.

How has undertaking the study abroad programme has helped towards, or shaped, your future career?

Undertaking the study abroad programme at Copenhagen Business School has been instrumental in shaping my future career aspirations in finance, particularly in investment banking.

The intensive three-week course in corporate finance provided a comprehensive understanding of crucial financial concepts and their real-world applications. This experience has significantly enhanced my practical skills in financial analysis, valuation techniques, and risk management—skills that are indispensable in the investment banking sector. The focus on analysing financial statements and using accounting data to inform strategic decisions has prepared me to handle the complex financial transactions and advisory services central to investment banking.

Moreover, the experience of living and studying abroad in Copenhagen has been invaluable. Immersing myself in a new culture and connecting with peers from diverse backgrounds has broadened my global perspective and enhanced my cultural competence.

These experiences are crucial in the globalised world of investment banking, where cross-cultural communication and international collaboration are key. Studying abroad has also made me more adaptable and open to working in different international settings in the future. This global exposure not only strengthens my professional skills but also aligns perfectly with the dynamic and international nature of investment banking.

Overall, the study abroad programme at Copenhagen Business School has deepened my technical knowledge, enriched my global perspective, and reinforced my passion for finance, providing a clear and well-rounded pathway towards achieving my career goals in investment banking.

What advice would you give to a future student thinking of undertaking a study abroad programme?

If you're considering undertaking a study abroad programme, my advice is to just go for it. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made and an experience I truly cherish. Immersing yourself in a new culture and educational environment offers invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

You'll gain a fresh perspective, develop new skills, and build a global network that can enhance both your academic and career journeys. Embrace the adventure with an open mind and enthusiasm, and you'll find it to be an enriching and transformative experience.

How did you find the change from studying in Northern Ireland to studying abroad?

The transition from studying in Northern Ireland to studying abroad was incredibly refreshing. I loved the change, as it added a new level of variety and excitement to my academic journey.

Studying in Copenhagen provided a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture and hear diverse perspectives from peers from all over the globe. Engaging with people from various backgrounds and learning about their views and takes on different subjects was incredibly enlightening. This shift not only broadened my perspectives but also offered fresh insights and experiences that I wouldn't have gained otherwise.

Overall, the change was a fantastic opportunity that I highly valued for the variety, new experiences, and global viewpoints it brought.
