Undergraduate: Tong En's Placement at Citco Fund Service Company
Tong En Sim is a BSc Finance with a Year in Industry student who completed her placement as a Private Equity Fund Service Intern at Citco Fund Service Company.
Tell us about your placement
For my placement, I joined Citco Fund Service Company as a Private Equity Fund Service Intern. In this role, I assist in the completion of Quarterly Reporting Pack preparation. Also, I am responsible for maintaining the journal entries in Investran Accounting in a timely manner. Another one of my duties is reviewing and updating client’s important documents for example limited partnership agreements, PPMs, Subscription documents and Capital call notice. I provide support in the preparation of capital calls, distributions, and statements. Besides that, I assist in the implementation of fund structures on accounting system. I am responsible for coordinating with the onboarding team, Investor Relations group and clients, providing assistance on managing cash and portfolio reconciliations.
Which areas of placement did you find most rewarding?
Undertaking a placement year abroad has provided me with much more hands on experience as you are given real responsibilities. The most rewarding part of my placement year was that it took me out of my comfort zone as I relocated to a new city, met new people, experienced the corporate life and embraced the culture.
Please describe how undertaking the placement year has helped towards, or shaped, your future career?
I am grateful that Citco provided me the golden opportunity to discover my strengths and weakness, as well as develop on my skills and knowledge. Getting the opportunity to work with one of the worlds leading hedge fund administration companies, I was able to discover a wide range of career opportunities within the finance industry. Working in a large team of 31 people has allowed me to further develop on my social and communication skills. My social circle has expanded as a result of continuously building connections and networking with people.
What advice would you give to a future student starting their placement?
One of the best takeaways from my placement experience that I would also advise to future placement students is to embrace the placement year, seize the opportunity given to you by taking initiative in work and network with people - you reap what you sow.
