Speaker: Professor Bobby Duffy, King’s College London

In his new book ‘Generations: Does when you’re born shape who you are?’ Bobby Duffy illustrates the strength of the three effects (period effect, cohort effect and lifecycle effect) in understanding social change. This international webinar will focus on the significance of the three effects in understanding changing generational perspectives about polity (identity movements) and development (globalization, economic liberalization) and the role of class in it. The event will be chaired by Murchana Kaushik, Post Graduate Researcher at Queen’s University Belfast and Tezpur University, India, who is currently undertaking fieldwork on political generations in India. Professor Duffy will present his work, which will be followed by a response from Ms. Kaushik on the significance of his work for the Indian context.

Bobby Duffy is Professor of Public policy and Director of the Policy Institute at King’s College, London. He is known for his contribution to research and analysis in the area of Public policy. His first book ‘The perils of perception- Why we’re wrong about nearly everything’ spoke about people’s misperception of the social reality. His recent book ‘Generations- Does when you’re born shape who you are?’ proposes a novel approach to understand social change through generational thinking. This book highlights the significance of what Duffy calls the ‘three effects’ in understanding why and how the beliefs, behaviours and attitudes of a society change.
