Sociology book talk and launch
All are cordially invited to the launch of a new book by Dr Niall Gilmartin and Dr Brendan Ciarán Browne entitled Refugees and Forced Displacement in Northern Ireland’s Troubles: Untold Journeys 

Based on 88 in-depth qualitative interviews with victims and survivors, the book provides the first comprehensive examination of forced displacement in Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’. Niall and Brendan will discuss the myriad of short- and long-term harms and consequences of forced movement for individuals, families, and communities and how such consequences continue to manifest in a profound sense of dislocation and unsettledness in the present with regards to identity, place, and belonging. While much positive change has occurred since the GFA, the neglect of displacement as a category of violence and harm within the peace process, bequeaths a large cohort of marginalised victims and survivors whose conflict-related losses have yet to be recognised, much less acknowledged and addressed. Given this, they will also outline a range of mechanisms capable of effectively redressing the impacts of displacement.

Speaker biography
Dr Brendan Ciarán Browne is Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution, Trinity College Dublin. He works on issues relating to conflict and forced displacement, settler colonialism, liberal peacebuilding and transitional justice in Northern Ireland and Palestine. His recent books include Refugees and Forced Displacement in Northern Ireland’s Troubles: Untold Journeys (with Dr Niall Gilmartin), and Transitional (in)Justice and Enforcing the Peace on Palestine

Niall Gilmartin is Lecturer in Sociology at Ulster University and researches and teaches in the areas of armed conflict, gender, peace, and conflict transformation. He has published articles in the International Feminist Journal of Politics, Capital & Class, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, International Journal of Transitional Justice and Irish Political Studies. His books include Female Combatants After Armed Struggle: Lost In Transition? published by Routledge in 2019, Northern Ireland: A Generation after Good Friday: Lost Futures and New Horizons in the 'Long Peace', co-authored with Colin Coulter, Katy Hayward & Peter Shirlow published in July 2021 by MUP and Refugees and Forced Displacement in Northern Ireland’s Troubles: Untold Journeys, co-authored with Brendan Ciarán Browne and published by LUP.
