In SSESW, we are social scientists committed to engaging with, and build knowledge and capacity in society.  Issues such as inequality, crime and social justice are at the heart of our research and teaching across the various criminology, sociology, social policy and social work programmes as part of multi-disciplinary analysis of societal issues.

Our award-winning teaching and nationally recognised degree programmes offer innovative teaching by subject experts to create a unique experience for our students.  As a Russell Group university, we take pride in the fact that all of our staff engage in cutting-edge research and this, in turn, feeds into the high quality teaching in the School.

We also invest in supporting your academic achievement and personal development through our Personal Tutor and Peer Mentoring schemes, along with a wide range of additional learning support delivered through our state-of-the-art online learning environment.  We are particularly proud of our Student Voice Committees, where students work together with staff to make our degree programmes the best possible experience.

Criminology at Queen's provides a unique vantage point to study crime and justice in a society transitioning from conflict. Criminologists are interested in how activities come to be defined as ‘criminal’, and why definitions and responses to crime vary over time and place.

Criminology includes a broad range of perspectives on understanding crime and criminal behaviour and examines various methods in the prevention, policing and punishment of crime. Our Criminology degrees also consider how and why people move away from crime, ways in which this might be facilitated and offenders reintegrated.

Social Policy and Sociology Course

Social Policy students learn how to tackle major policy problems. They do this by applying core concepts from social science to intractable social problems such as gender inequality, eldercare, children’s rights and climate change. As an applied and critical social science, you will gain knowledge and understanding of contemporary government policies, their impacts, and consider how we can achieve improvements.

The BSW degree is the recognised professional qualification in Social Work. Teaching involves both academic study and practice learning opportunities, which are delivered in partnership with social work agencies.

Practice learning opportunities are allocated in collaboration with a wide range of social work agencies and the process is managed by the Northern Ireland Degree in Social Work Partnership. The course offers graduates a generic qualification to practice as Social Workers with a range of service user groups in different settings and agencies.

Sociology is a scientific discipline concerned with the explanation of social life and human behaviour of all kinds.

It equips students with the skills to understand the breadth of social practice, ranging from the global (including power and politics, conflict and peace processes, security, the digital world, climate change, racism and social justice) to individual experiences (such as the body, intimacy, emotions, identity, beliefs and mental health).

Through theoretical tools and methodological techniques, Sociology provides students with a unique way of interacting with the world as critical and engaged citizens.

“I chose to study at Queen’s because I wanted the independence of living away from home but with the convenience of being a 45-minute flight away from home. I was also aware that Belfast was one of the cheapest cities for students and the GB student scholarship provided many benefits, such as financial support towards flights home. I also thought it would be interesting to study sociology in a post-conflict society.” Shona Allen

SOCIAL SCIENCES STUDENT JOURNAL

The journal aims to provide a platform where undergraduate students can disseminate high-quality assignments beyond the lecture halls to a wider audience of peers, academics, policymakers, and practitioners. The interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences allows our journal to bring together diverse perspectives from subject areas like sociology, education, social policy, and more. It is available both online and in print form. Social Sciences Student Journal – Queen's University Belfast

STUDY ABROAD

We have partnerships with institutions across the world offering our students the opportunity to learn in an international context.

Social Work students have the opportunity to participate in a summer visit to addiction and mental health service providers and a drug court in America.  There is also the opportunity to travel to Germany to learn about social work services.

Students can spend time studying abroad through Erasmus with universities in one of our linked universities in Europe.
