Scaling QCAP’s Engaged Research Impact through Small Grant Awards
Queen's Communities and Place (QCAP) has secured a recent portfolio of research funding that demonstrates the growing recognition of community and place-based research in addressing complex social challenges.

This recent grant capture, totalling over £50,000, reflects QCAP's strategic commitment to scaling impact whilst maintaining authentic community engagement. The awards span multiple research councils and international partnerships, showcasing methodological innovation and policy relevance.
For example, BERA's Small Grant will support the co-design of inclusive ASN/SEND provision in South Belfast, building directly on community-identified priorities through the Market Development Association partnership. This exemplifies QCAP's place-based approach, where academic rigour meets grassroots expertise. Two ESRC Impact Acceleration Awards demonstrate different scaling strategies. The i3o Belfast initiative will connect local community engagement practice to international inclusive innovation frameworks, whilst GridSense NI will translate census data into accessible digital tools and outputs through co-design with Belfast communities. Both projects bridge the research-practice divide by ensuring academic outputs serve real-world needs. The AHRC-supported initiatives—documenting storytelling processes through film and creating immersive touring exhibitions — are also Impact Accelerator Awards, showcasing how creative knowledge translation methods can serve to amplify working-class voices while informing policy locally and beyond.
This recent funding illustrates how QCAP’s sustained community academic partnerships across Belfast are creating conditions for methodological innovation, policy influence, and positive place-based transformation. QCAP's approach demonstrates that community-engaged research can simultaneously serve local needs but also contribute to wider knowledge and policy frameworks, offering a model for scaling impact whilst maintaining authentic connections with local communities.
