Exploring Belfast and Studying Medicine at Queen’s

Natasha Morgan is a second-year postgraduate medical student who shares her experiences of life at Queen’s, the transition from England, and the wide range of opportunities available to students living and studying in Belfast.

Moving from Surrey to study Medicine at Queen’s has been one of my best decisions. New friendships, connections, and the vibrant campus life have made Belfast feel like home.

Why I chose to study Medicine at Queen’s

After finishing my Biomedical Sciences degree at the University of Birmingham, I knew I wasn’t done with university life just yet. Medicine felt like the natural next step. I wanted a career where I could genuinely help people and apply my love for biology in a real, hands-on way. Queen’s immediately stood out to me and currently stands 4th on the Medicine subject league table (Complete University Guide 2026).

The clinical teaching is known for being practical early, and incredibly supportive, and now that I’m here, I can confidently say it lives up to its reputation. From getting onto the wards early to learning through small-group teaching, I’ve already felt myself grow both academically and personally. Moving to Belfast pushed me outside my comfort zone, but it also opened the door to new friendships, new experiences, and finding a university that truly feels like the right fit.

Enjoying Campus, student Societies, and the Outdoors

One of my favourite things about Queen’s has to be the Botanic Gardens right on campus! I’ve loved having summer picnics with friends there, taking study breaks just steps from the McClay Library, or going for a peaceful walk to recharge. The tropical greenhouses are gorgeous, and there are always little quiet corners to just sit and relax between lectures. Being right by the PEC gym and sports facilities makes it so easy to stay active; I swim, lift weights, or fit in a quick gym session, which is fantastic for both my mental and physical wellbeing.

Studying here has also given me the chance to explore nature in ways I never had at home. I joined the Wilderness and Expedition Society and did an amazing hike up Cave Hill, meeting new people along the way. In the summer, my friends and I spent time at Helen’s Bay, swimming and enjoying the outdoors.

I’ve also been lucky enough to travel to the Giant’s Causeway, which was breathtaking. As someone who loves photography and art, these trips have been perfect for capturing Northern Ireland’s stunning landscapes. I’ve also continued painting and drawing by taking part in the Art Society, and for something a bit more adventurous, the indoor bouldering gym and Mountaineering Club have been a really fun way to stay active.

Another thing I love about living in Belfast is the opportunity to travel and enjoy live music. Living in BT2 during my first year placed me right in the city centre, making it easy to immerse myself in the city’s vibrant music scene. I even took a day trip to Dublin for a concert, which was amazing, and so straightforward thanks to Belfast’s great transport links. Being based here has made it simple to explore not only the city, but also nearby towns and landmarks, blending student life with new experiences.

Life at the Students’ Union

One of the best parts of life at Queen’s has to be the Students’ Union. It’s such a welcoming space, full of things to do, and I always feel looked after when I’m there. As someone on a student budget, I love the Swap Shop for second-hand clothes; I’ve picked up some great preloved items while giving mine a new home. The free breakfasts and lunches have been lifesavers during busy exam periods or when we’ve been on placement.

The SU staff are incredibly friendly and generous, often handing out free tea and coffee, which makes a big difference on hectic days. My friends and I also love hanging out in the kitchen and games room, playing table tennis or pool, or just grabbing a coffee between lectures, it’s such a fun spot and a great place for socialising.

Advice for Students from England

I know that coming to Queen’s from England and having to get on a plane or ferry can feel a bit daunting at first, but it’s honestly not as far as it seems. The flight is actually shorter than the train journeys I used to take to and from Birmingham during my previous degree. Once you’ve done the trip once, it becomes second nature, and you realise how easy it is to travel back and forth. Plus, there’s something really nice about hopping on a quick flight back to Belfast after the holidays and feeling excited to reunite with your friends.

"I wouldn’t have the friendships or experiences I have now if I’d stayed closer to home"

Moving here has honestly been one of the best things I’ve done. Stepping out of my comfort zone helped me grow a lot, and I wouldn’t have the friendships or experiences I have now if I’d stayed closer to home. Belfast has such a friendly student community, and settling in happens way quicker than you’d expect. You find your own routine, your favourite spots, and people who make university life really fun.

I’m so glad I took the plunge, and I hope you do too.

Medicine | Postgraduate Student | England, UK

Hi there! I’m Natasha, a second-year postgraduate medical student at Queen’s. I’m especially interested in psychiatry, and before this I spent some time researching infectious diseases.

Outside of my studies, I’m passionate about art, I love oil painting, drawing, and visiting galleries whenever I can. Since coming to Queen’s, I’ve also started getting into film photography, which has been a fun new hobby. I enjoy travelling, going to live music events, and staying active through weightlifting and swimming.

I’m excited to begin my clinical years and continue developing both academically and personally, while meeting even more people at Queen’s.
