Spending Christmas in Belfast as an International Student

Looking for Christmas celebration inspo? International student Natasha has some suggestions for festive fun below.

When a festival is as multi-cultural and diverse as Christmas, every city has something new to offer. Likewise, Belfast seems to put on a brilliant show of merry lights, buzzing continental shops in the market, and countless activities to enjoy.

This is my second year spending Christmas in Belfast, and I have come to love every part of the celebration: the lights switch-on, the City Hall market, the 50% off sale at many stores, Joy’s Entry’s special decorations, etc. I even loved attending my sister’s winter graduation recently. It is the right amount of cold and cosy for me.

However, homesickness is also an inevitable part of the holidays as an international student. If you are someone who feels the same way too, please know you are one of many. Recently, I attended the School of HAPP’s International Students Christmas Social at the Europa Hotel. Over eighty people were in attendance. Upon chatting with a few, I realised that even though we were all feeling a bit lonely about spending Christmas here, there was also a sure sense of excitement and curiosity.

Looking forward to having a bit of break and exploring the city during this time was a common aspect for us. The social is also where I broke open a Christmas cracker for the first time! These events organised by your School or the SU are always fun to attend at least once in a while.

Coming from a country like India where a range of religions are practiced, Belfast is a bundle of joy where Christmas decor in the streets is much more abundant. The weather is cooperative with the vibe too, haha! Each day it gets closer to Christmas, it becomes much more delightful for me. Christmas trees, over-sized jumpers, and tinsel have all been on full display since Halloween wrapped.

I have already been to the Christmas market a few times, tried different shops, and am keen to visit many more. The key to not missing home or friends and family back home too much is to fill your schedule with as many events as you can. Queen's societies have almost finished conducting them for the year, but Northern Ireland has more to offer.

The Lisburn Light Trail is one such fun activity open to all for free, ideal for hanging out with friends or for date nights, or even to take a stroll through by yourself! This also includes a mini Christmas market Wednesday – Saturday.

Another exciting event I am personally considering is ‘The Secret Bookshop’ – performances happening from 6 - 24 December this year. This is conducted by the Cahoots Theatre and even offers two relaxed performances if you would like a less-overwhelming experience.

The Winter Circus at Writer’s Square, Belfast, is another unforgettable experience you can book tickets for. This one will contain performances by international aerialists, acrobats, and clowns! Also remember to check out https://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/Events/Christmas-animation-programme for more free live performances. There are also many free events/workshops offered in 2 Royal Avenue for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

As you embrace the Christmas spirit with some well-deserved hot chocolate (I recommend Bailey’s caramel hot chocolate at the Christmas market), or cosy up in your pyjamas for a Home Alone marathon, also remember to go out, meet new people, stock up on your favourite chocolates and pastries, grab a gingerbread latte and have a merry, merry Christmas!
