Choosing Queen's for PhD Study

In March 2022, my odyssey into the world of academia commenced at Queen's. What drew me in was not just the prestige of the institution, but the incredible supervisors who went beyond simply being mentors. Their approachability and unwavering support turned my academic dreams into a reality. Fast forward to today, and they're still the beacons guiding me through the challenges and triumphs of the PhD journey.

Resilience in PhD Life

PhD life is a dance of complexity and perseverance. It's all about facing setbacks, embracing challenges, and evolving every day. Queen's University has crafted an environment that nurtures not only academic excellence but also equips students to navigate life's unpredictable twists with grace. It's not just about mastering theories; it's about mastering the art of resilience.

The Unplanned Istanbul Stopover

Life has a funny way of testing your resilience, right? My initial flight plans got cancelled, leading to an unexpected pitstop in Istanbul. What could have been a stressful detour turned into an unexpected blessing. Two days of chilling in a beautiful hotel – a forced pause that became a gift, preparing me for the adventure that lay ahead.

Finding a Flat in Stranmillis

Setting up a new home in Belfast brought me to Stranmillis Road, more than just an address. It became a vibrant community hub. Proximity to the campus and the presence of fellow Turkish students turned it into a genuine support system. The warmth of belonging extended beyond the walls of my apartment, weaving into the streets and spaces around me.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

Queen's University is a global melting pot, a vibrant tapestry where students from around the world bring their unique cultures and perspectives. The beauty of being an international student is the serendipity of unexpected connections. Sharing meals, collaborating on projects, and attending cultural events turn the campus into a lively festival of global unity.

Cultural Fusion Beyond the Campus

Life as an international student extends beyond the campus gates. Belfast itself is a city that thrives on diversity. Local markets, festivals, and community events provide opportunities to engage with the city's rich cultural tapestry. Exploring Belfast with friends from different parts of the world turns every outing into an adventure, blending local and global experiences.

Balancing Acts: Navigating Work, Study, and Social Ties

Beyond academia, I've taken on various roles—from student helper to tour guide and graduation assistant. It's not just about work; it's about weaving a tapestry of social connections alongside my academic journey. Being a tour guide isn't just about showcasing the campus; it's about being a bridge for prospective students. And as a graduation assistant, I witness the joy and pride of students crossing the stage, adding a fulfilling social dimension to my PhD life.
