Ada Lovelace Day 2024

8 October, 2024

For this year's Ada Lovelace Day celebrations, we hosted a panel event at the School of EEECS and held a coding workshop with Ashfield Girls' High School.

Ada Lovelace Panel Event

This panel event brought together individuals from a variety of backgrounds to share their experiences, offer guidance and build a sense of community and belonging for women in STEM.

Speakers and Contributors

The panel featured a range of research speakers and industry panellists, each offering valuable perspectives and insights.

Research Speakers:

  • Jane Moore – PhD Student, EEECS

  • Rossita Maclean – PhD Student, EEECS

  • Dr Zahra Mobini – Research Fellow, EEECS

  • Dr María García Fernández – MSCA Research Fellow, EEECS

Industry Panellists:

  • Hannah Fleming – Talent Acquisition Lead - UK & Ireland Early Careers, Kainos

  • Ciara Burke – Senior Software Engineer, Rapid7

Representatives from PwC and the Women in STEM QUB Society were also present to offer students the chance to expand their networks and explore potential career opportunities.

Key Takeaways from the Event

The insights shared by our speakers provided attendees with practical guidance and personal reflections. Here are some of the key takeaways from the event:

  • Build a Supportive Network: Forming connections with like-minded peers can provide essential support and inspiration. Success is often a team effort, and a strong community can help individuals thrive.

  • Harness Empathy and Compassion: While technical skills are essential, empathy and compassion play a key role in leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration.

  • Embrace Lifelong Learning: Engaging in research and seizing learning opportunities is vital. Continuous learning drives personal and professional growth.

  • Champion Diversity: Diverse perspectives contribute to innovation and resilience. Embracing diversity creates a more inclusive and dynamic STEM environment.

  • Make Your Mark: Women in STEM should feel encouraged to pursue their individual paths. It’s important to recognize the value of diverse contributions and perspectives.

Looking Ahead

This event was an opportunity to promote growth and possibility. By bringing together students, researchers, and industry professionals, we aim to support a community where women in STEM can develop and thrive. As we continue to champion diversity, inclusion, and empowerment, we remain committed to supporting the next generation of women in STEM as they pursue their unique paths in the field.
