EEECS 2025 International Women’s Day Event - Smart Tech: To use or Abuse?

7 March, 2025

On Friday 7 March, we celebrated International Women's Day 2025 by highlighting an EEECS PhD Researcher working on the misuse of smart tech.

A group of people gathered in a modern indoor space with large windows, colourful balloons, and casual seating. The attendees are smiling and looking at the camera, seated on beanbags and chairs, with some standing in the background.

Adrianne Thompson gave an enlightening and frightening talk on the double-edged sword of smart devices, and how tech can be misused, especially in domestic abuse cases.

We heard via numerous examples that technology is gendered, so we all need to consider innovation from a variety of perspectives and consider the dual purpose of any innovative tool.  We also heard that policy and regulatory frameworks cannot keep up with fast-paced technological developments.

So what can we do?

Adrianne suggested several takeaways to all attendees, from better understanding your digital footprint, to advocating for tech security policies, supporting research and awareness in this domain and amplifying the voices of women in tech.

A promotional graphic for a talk titled 'Smart Tech: To Use or Abuse?' featuring Adrianne Thompson from the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT). The design includes an illustration of a woman interacting with a smartwatch, a pink speech bubble containing the title, and event branding for ATHENA SWAN and IWD2025. The hashtag '#AccelerateAction for Gender Equality' is displayed.

A speaker stands at a podium, behind her, a large screen displays a slide titled 'Technology is Gendered,' discussing historical biases in tech design and their impact on access and safety. A Queen’s University Belfast and Athena SWAN banner is visible to the right.

A large screen behind her displays the event title along with the Athena SWAN Silver Award logo. A banner for Queen’s University Belfast and the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) is also visible.
