International Business, Entrepreneurship and Marketing
The Department of International Business, Entrepreneurship, and Marketing (IBEM) explores the roles of organisations, from multinational firms to start-up social ventures, in shaping a better world, particularly the transition to net zero and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our broad research interests include strategic management, international business in the digital era, business and society, negotiating cultural differences, regional development, technology transfer, social entrepreneurship, international marketing and R&D strategies, consumer culture and institutional change.
We explore these topics using a diverse spectrum of theoretical approaches from neoclassical economics, neo institutional, critical realism, actor-network theory, and assemblage thinking. Methodological expertise incorporates, but is not limited to, panel data analysis, structural equation modelling, qualitative longitudinal approaches, discourse analysis, ethnography, and poetic enquiry.
Our research has been funded by bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Arts and Humanities Research Council, The European Commission, Innovate UK, Leverhulme, British Academy, and UK and devolved governments.

Academics within the Department of IBEM have published work in world leading journals including Journal of Management, Academy of Management Annals, Global Strategy Journal, Human Resource Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Journal of World Business, British Journal of Management, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Small Business Management, Public Administration, Public Management Review, and Social Science and Medicine.
An active community of doctoral students are exploring the role of organisations in shaping a better world in the Department of IBEM. PhD students benefit from attending courses and tailor-made reading groups, and have access to the School's seminar series, which attracts leading global academics.
Odhrán McIntaggart is in the second year of his PhD researching how Spanish digital start-ups maintain competitive advantage while scaling globally, and how their investors impact on this process.

IBEM Research Project Spotlight
Throughout 2022, Professor Mark Palmer from Queen's Business School and Joseph Ireland from Queen’s University Belfast have released two new landmark reports for the Department for the Economy and the Northern Ireland Geothermal Advisory Committee, on geothermal energy in Northern Ireland.

Researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, including Dr Thomas Hastings, are examining how the environmental and economic challenges of rice farming in Thailand could be alleviated using anaerobic digestion. The harmful impacts of burning rice straw could be prevented, expensive and environmentally damaging fossil fertilisers could be replaced, and sustainable clean-burning indigenous energy could be provided. All of this would benefit farming communities as well as the wider population.
