Student involvement in vaccination clinics

We have had a few queries from Practices (as we often do in the autumn) as to whether students can be involved with seasonal vaccination clinics.

The GMC list 23 practical procedures that all UK graduating medical students must be competent at by point of graduation. Preparation and administration of all injectable (IM/SC and IV) drugs is included in this list. QUB students are all encouraged to get observed and signed off as competent in Y3 as safe to practise this skill under direct supervision. Any qualified nurse or doctor can sign this off; full details (students could show you this should you wish) are in the ‘GMC23’ section of their MyProgress portfolio.

Students have fed back to us in previous years that they value the learning opportunities (obviously balanced alongside other learning activities) that vaccination clinics can offer – both in terms of developing practical skills and the volume of patient interactions involved.

Thanks again for your support with educating our future doctors through hosting QUB students in your Practice.
